Doda is a small town located in the eastern segment of the Jammu region in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is the administrative headquarters of Doda district. Consequently, the town is very important from administrative point of view. In addition, the area having wonderful scenic beauty is also a favorite tourist destination.
History of DodaAlthough not much is known about the history of Doda, there is an interesting story about its origin. This area was once ruled by the Rajas of Kishtwar. We do not know exactly when, but it is believed that one of the Rajas once invited a utensil maker called Deeda to settle here. This man was originally from Multan. He accepted the king’s invitation and set up utensil factory here. Soon the place began to be known as Deeda, which over the years became Doda.
From this little episode we can gather that Doda was actually a prosperous town under the principality of Krishtwar. Most people at that time followed Hinduism. Islam was introduced in Doda in 1650 with the arrival of Hazrat Shah Farid-ud-Din. He came here via Ramban and Dengbattal and lived here for 14 years teaching the tenets of Islam. He then left for Kishtwar.
Later the area was amalgamated with Udahmpur District. When in 1948, a separate Doda District was carved out of Udhampur, Doda town became its administrative headquarters. However, due to vastness of the district, the state government in 2006 further trifurcated it to form three separate districts; i.e. Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar. Doda town remained with the Doda district and till now continues to serve as its administrative headquarters.
